Contamination: Moderna recalls 764,900 COVID-19 vaccine doses in Europe

U.S. pharmaceutical and biotechnology company Moderna Inc. on Friday issued a recall in Europe of 764,900 doses of its COVID-19 vaccine after contaminants were discovered in a vial.

"The batch is being recalled because a foreign substance was found in a vial manufactured at the company's contract manufacturing site, ROVI" Moderna and Spain's ROVI Pharma Industrial Services shared in a joint statement.

They did not specify which contaminant was found.

The contamination was traced in only one vial of the batch and the company's investigators "do not believe" that the contamination posed a risk to other vials in the batch. Nonetheless, the entire batch, or what little of it has not yet been used, has been recalled. In fact, the batch was already distributed to Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden on January 13 and 14.

"Moderna conducted a search of its global safety database and no safety concerns were reported in individuals who received Moderna COVID-19 vaccine from this batch. To date, no safety or efficacy issues have been identified," the statement said.

To date, more than 900 million doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine have been administered worldwide.

Last year, Moderna had several of its COVID-19 vaccines recalled after investigations in Japan found stainless steel in some vials. Incidentally, the batches recalled at the time were manufactured by the same Spanish company, ROVI.

Three men (ages 30, 38 and 49) in Japan had become seriously ill in August 2021 after receiving a second dose of the recalled COVID-19 vaccine and died shortly thereafter.
