The Netherlands opposes Rutte's ruling about 'our war': 'Violation of the Constitution and therefore punishable'
A journalist asked Prime Minister Rutte on Friday after the Council of Ministers during the weekly press conference whether we are not slowly but surely being thrown into a war that is not necessarily ours. He replied that 'that war there is ours'.
Many Dutch people disagree with him, as witnessed by the fact that the hashtags 'not my war' and 'not our war' are trending topics on Twitter. It is also pointed out that the Prime Minister is breaking the law with this statement.
PVV leader Geert Wilders writes, for example, that he is illegally messing with us in a war. "It is not our war, Rutte and if you really believe that, you are in violation of the Constitution and therefore punishable." Wilders refers to Article 96 of the Dutch Constitution, which states: “The Kingdom shall not be declared at war unless with the prior consent of the States General.”
In violation of the law
“Rutte talks about 'our war'. That is a declaration of war on Russia. But for such a statement, according to the Dutch Constitution, he needs permission from the House of Representatives and the Senate. He is therefore in violation of the law with his statement," explains journalist Joost Niemoller.
“A parliamentary debate about Rutte's declaration of war seems to me to be the least. Or are we going to pass this again in silence and find ourselves in a war without a word being exchanged?” he asks Wilders.
Immediately withdraw and resign
Writer Leon de Winter goes one step further. He thinks Rutte should resign. “Now that Putin knows this, the Netherlands is a target of Russian missiles from submarines and from the air. Rutte must immediately withdraw this and resign," emphasizes De Winter.
Philosopher of law Raisa Blommestijn comments: “I am curious whether the good guys realize that Rutte's statement that 'the war in Ukraine is ours' means just a little more than hoisting a Ukrainian flag or placing it in your bio.”
